Baguette Pizza Bites

2023 is only 2 days away, and this will be my last post of 2022. I wish all my readers a wonderful New Year. Here’s to new beginnings and a year filled with lots of positivity and happiness. I always like to retrospect when a year comes to an end. I’m very happy with how 2022 served me, with the cherry on top being this blog. I thank everyone for your support. It means the world to me.

Pizzas are always a hit at any party. What can be better than a Pizza? Well, these Baguette Pizza bites are a superior cousin to the traditional pizza slices at parties. Parties mean socializing and lots of finger foods. You don’t want to be hogging a huge slice of pizza down when you talk to a new acquaintance or an old friend whom you meet after ages.

Pizza bites serving suggestion

I’m not a huge fan of pizza at parties. By the time you start eating the half-cold pizzas, the base would’ve become soggy from all the sauce sitting on it for hours. I love Bruschetta and I came up with a clever way to incorporate the flavors of pizza in the form of finger food.

Ingredients for Baguette Pizza Bites

Baguette

Using a good quality baguette is the key. Baguettes have a firm and chewy crust, keeping them crisp even hours after baking the Pizza bites.

Pizza Sauce

You can use any of your favorite pizza sauces, either store-bought or homemade.

Veggies

Use veggies of your choice. I’ve used red and yellow bell peppers and onion.

Cheese

Mozzarella is the top option. However, you can use any cheese that you have in your fridge. Always shred your own cheese to make them spread better in the oven. Pre-Shredded cheese won’t melt easily and give a weird texture when baked.

Italian seasoning

You can either use a blend of Italian seasoning as I did or use dried Oregano or Basil flakes.

Step-by-Step method

Baguette Pizza – Prep work

Step 1: Preheat oven to 400 F or 200 C. Chop the veggie topping finely, as they are going to be sitting on little slices of the Baguette. Making them too big will cause them to overflow. Also, it’s easier to bite into it if the toppings are not too big. I’ve used red and yellow bell peppers and red onion. Feel free to get creative here.

Step 2: Grate the cheese and keep it aside. I would strongly advise staying away from pre-shredded cheese for this recipe but use it if that’s all you have handy.

Step 3: Make 1-inch-thick slices of the Baguette using a Serrated knife. If your Baguette is pre-cut, you can ignore this step.

Step 4: Let’s move on to the fun part now. Arrange the Baguette slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Top them with a teaspoon of pizza sauce and spread them evenly.

Step 5: Add 1 teaspoon of chopped bell peppers and 1/2 a teaspoon of onion on top of the slices. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and some Italian seasoning. Taste the pizza sauce to gauge how much salt you want to add. The salt is just for the veggies. Remember, the pizza sauce and cheese have salt in them already. Don’t add too much salt.

Step 6: Add a generous topping of grated cheese. Can there even be too much cheese? It’s okay if it looks overstuffed now. The cheese will melt and give a beautiful crust.

Step 7: Bake them in the oven for 9-10 minutes until the cheese bubbles and has melted completely.

Step 8:  Take it out and let it sit for at least 5 minutes before digging in, as it will be scorching hot.

Can I use Pre-shredded cheese to make Baguette Pizza Bites?

You can. However, I would always recommend staying away from the pre-shredded ones in general. They have a substance called cellulose which is a filler. For this recipe, grating your own cheese will make sure your cheese topping melts beautifully and bubbles like it does in traditional pizzas. Using the pre-shredded cheese will yield in a stringy texture because the cellulose will retard the cheese sticking to each other and melting.

Notes

  • Make sure you block cheese and grate it. Using a pre-shredded cheese will not yield a smooth top.
  • You can use any cheese, although mozzarella would be the best to get the exact pizza texture.
  • Chop the veggies finely.
  • Get creative with toppings and garnishes.
