Guacamole is a Mexican dip made from Avocados and is typically served with Tortilla chips. It can also be added as a side to any Mexican meal.

I had Guacamole for the first time when I moved to the US. However, I never cared for it much, as I felt it was too bland.

It all changed when I had a table-side Guacamole at an amazing Mexican restaurant in Dallas. As I could customize the heat level and tanginess, I was in heaven when I had my first mouthful.

It became my favorite dip ever!

I make it at home every week. We either have it as a snack with a side of Tortilla chips or slather it on toasted bread for breakfast. It is very versatile.

I did Baby-led-weaning with my son, and Avocado was one of his first foods. He relished it back then. Now, he finds it too bland to eat plain.

However, my son loves Guacamole. I usually keep some aside for him before I crank the heat up. I must say, it’s been a savior in getting him to eat Avocados these days.

As cliched as it sounds, this is one of the best guacamole recipes you’ll find online. Try it for yourself and be the judge!

Ingredients for Guacamole recipe

Avocados

It’s a no-brainer that Avocado is the main ingredient. However, be sure to use ripe Avocados. I’ll give you tips on how to check if an Avocado is ripe. Keep reading!

Onion

Traditionally, white onion is used to make Guacamole, but I always use red onions. I like the strong flavor from red onions. Feel free to swap the red onions with white.

Garlic

Garlic adds a wonderful pungent flavor to the dip. However, if you’re not a huge fan of raw garlic, skip it altogether. I’ve made Guacamole without garlic several times and I loved it equally.

Jalapenos

Reduce or increase the number of jalapenos according to your spice tolerance. You can also replace it with Indian green chilies if you like the flavor of green chilies better.

Lime juice

Do not skimp on the lime juice! The bland dip turns into an amazing zingy fiesta when you add lime juice to it. It’s like magic!

Cilantro/Coriander leaves

No Mexican dish is ever complete without the addition of cilantro.

How to choose ripe Avocados for Guacamole recipe?

If you have green Avocados, keep them on the countertop or wrap them up in a brown bag and leave them at room temperature to ripen. Please remember that Avocados do not ripen if refrigerated.

Ripe Avocados turn dark with no little to no traces of green skin. Also, they are softer to the touch.

Another way to check for ripeness is to remove the top stem part of the Avocado. If it’s green or yellow, it’s ripe.

Refrigerate them and use within a week.

After that, in a mortar and pestle, crush garlic and jalapenos. If you don’t have a mortar and pestle, you can chop them finely. Although, I strongly recommend using a mortar and pestle if you have one, as it makes a flavor-packed guacamole.
